Introduction:

Parenting in Islam is a sacred responsibility that involves nurturing, educating, and instilling Islamic values and ethics in children. As parents, we are accountable for guiding our children in a way that aligns with Allah’s (swt) satisfaction. Our children are regarded as a sacred trust, and we must provide them with a nurturing and safe environment.

Parents are accountable for providing their children with a nurturing and safe environment. In Islamic Parenting, we must teach our children about the Quran, the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the Islamic way of life. By doing so, we instill in them values such as respect, kindness, honesty, and responsibility, which are essential for leading a successful and fulfilling life based on Islamic principles.

The Quranic Stance on Parenting

The Quran provides guidance for parenting in Islam, underscoring the significance of nurturing, educating, and caring for children in accordance with Islamic values. Parents are responsible for directing their children towards righteousness and piety.

In Surah At-Tahrim (66:6), it is stated:

O believers! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, overseen by formidable and severe angels, who never disobey whatever Allah orders—always doing as commanded. [Surah At-Tahrim (66:6)]

This verse reminds us to protect our families from Hellfire, guiding our children toward the right path and shielding them from harm.

Prophet (S.A.W.) Teachings on Parenting

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught about parenting, including how to raise children in the light of Islam. It’s important to show love and tenderness towards children, as Prophet Muhammad (saw) emphasized.

This is highlighted in a Hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (ra):

Al-Aqra’ bin Habis (ra) saw Allah’s Apostle (saw) kissing Hazrat Hasan (ra). He (ra) said:

I have ten children, but I have never kissed any one of them.

Whereupon Allah’s Messenger (saw) said:

He who does not show mercy (towards his children), no mercy would be shown to him.

[Sahih Muslim 2318a]

Hazrat Muhammad’s (saw) act of kissing his grandson and statement highlight the importance of showing love and compassion toward children.

Another narration from Sunan an-Nasa’i demonstrates the affection and kindness of Prophet Muhammad (saw) towards his grandsons Hazrat Hasan (ra) and Hussain (ra).

It was narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaddad (ra) that his father said:

“The Messenger of Allah (saw) came out to us for one of the nighttime prayers, and he was carrying Hazrat Hasan (ra) or Husain (ra). The Messenger of Allah (saw) came forward and put him down, then he said the Takbir and started to pray. He prostrated during his Prayer, and made the prostration lengthy.” My father said: “I raised my head and saw the child on the back of the Messenger of Allah (saw) while he was prostrating so I went back to my prostration. When the Messenger of Allah (saw) finished praying, the people said: “O Messenger of Allah (saw), you prostrated during the prayer for so long that we thought that something had happened or that you were receiving a revelation.’ He (saw) said: ‘No such thing happened. But my grandson was riding on my back and I did not like to disturb him until he had enough.'”

 [Sunan an-Nasa’i 1141]

In essence, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was affectionate and kind towards children, prioritizing their comfort even during Prayer.

Responsibilities of Parents in Islam

In the warm and welcoming world of a Muslim family, parents are the guiding stars for their little ones. They are the first teachers and the most influential role models who shape the future of their children with love, wisdom, and faith. Just like the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a mercy and a guide to his Ummah, Muslim parents strive to be a source of mercy and guidance to their children.

As parents, it is important to teach your children about the beauty of Salah, the discipline of fasting, the joy of giving Zakat, and the adventure of performing Hajj. You can share stories from the Quran and the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to inspire them to lead lives filled with compassion, honesty, and bravery.

Muslim parents must also emphasize the importance of good manners, respect for elders, and kindness to all living beings. They can develop good habits such as sharing, helping others, and being grateful for Allah’s blessings.

Parenting in Islam also requires us to show the importance of developing Taqwa in Allah (God-consciousness) and patience (Sabr) through our own actions. Together, Taqwa and Sabr form the foundation of a fulfilling Islamic life.

Obedience of Parents in the Quran and Hadith

In Islamic teachings, the Quran and Hadith place great emphasis on the obedience and respectful treatment of parents. This principle is deeply embedded in the fabric of Islamic morality and ethics.

Surah Al-Isra (17:23) of the holy Quran states this commandment by instructing believers to worship none but Allah and to extend kindness and respect to their parents.

Allah (swt) says:

And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff, ” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

[Surah Al-Isra Ayat 23]

The Hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (ra) emphasizes the remarkable status of mothers in Islam and the significance of treating them with utmost respect and kindness.

Allah’s Messenger (saw), who amongst the people is most deserving of my good treatment? He (saw) then said: Your mother, again your mother, again your mother, then your father, then your nearest relatives according to the order (of nearness).

[Sahih Muslim 2548b]

These teachings collectively form a cornerstone of the values of Parenting in Islam, while also emphasizing the importance of respecting our parents.
